HOw do we move forward?
Understanding Binghamton's assets are the key to its resilience and reimagining. They must be critically and strategically optimized and adapted using sustainable development, place-making, smart growth and ecological infrastructure. The same systems that produced many of the original assets to the city are in need of adjusting and in some cases, radical rethinking and change.
key components of Urban Resilience:
What assets exist in Binghamton?
Binghamton has a rich legacy on which its future will rely. Binghamton's infrastructure, transportation and education networks along with its architecture and institutions will be crucial to current and future development. And, its underrepresented and in some cases invisible assets, available services, agricultural land and economies, vacant affordable land and buildings, parks and open spaces, clean air and water will be key players, and likely leaders, in the 21st century adaption and reimagining of Binghamton.
Assets: legacy, dormant, invisible, new
Legacy: ArchitectureHistoric Buildings, many now empty, are relics of a more prosperous time, and a testament to Binghamton's legacy as a thriving center of industry. Binghamton has an architectural infrastructure in place to support diverse urban revitalization. Large floor areas await adaptive reuse and re-pruposing to activate and regenerate them along with their surroundings.

Dormant: Waterways and Railways Binghamton's location at the confluence of the Chenango and Susquehanna Rivers, along with its location on the Chenango Canal and several major Rail lines, made it a a prime spot for growth and manufacturing. Today the rails are mostly abandoned and there is minimal use of the rivers, which could become valuable resources for resiliency efforts and the reactivation of a low fuel transport structure.

Binghamton also has a huge opportunity to attract more tourists to the area with the transformation of Rock Bottom Dam into a world class white water rafting center.
